The Birmingham Civil Rights March is a Great Example of What an Organized America Can do.
America has always been known for battling back against seemingly insurmountable odds; it is almost as if Americans need to have some sort of conflict to unite against.
In the early days of the nation it was the British; it eventually became each other (in the Civil War); and has been the German and Japanese as well.
Not all the conflicts the nation has endured have necessitated a war in order to be resolved; some have just resulted in some rather serious internal strife.
It took years for the nation to free the slaves following the Civil War, but then we forgot that once these people were freed that they should be treated like the rest of us since they were of equal stature finally.
It took things like the organization of the Birmingham Civil Rights March to lead to the passing of civil rights legislation that gave them the rights they had deserved since the end of the Civil War.
In the nearly fifty years since most of the major civil rights movements have ended the nation has remained rather quiet.
Yes, there have been widespread demonstrations against the Vietnam War and Abortion has caused somewhat of an uproar (more so because of the illegal actions than legitimate ones), but the last thirty years have really been pretty quiet.
It is almost as if since the days of the Birmingham Civil Rights March the nation has forgotten how to be angry- how to really demonstrate.
It is not as if the nation has not had reason to either.
The government is essentially conducting a war right now not for any righteous reasons like with the Civil War, but simply for profit.
The government has used a tragedy like 9/11 to steadily strip the nation of its civil rights.
Barack Obama, the president promising change, is going right along with some of the messed up practices of the Bush administration like the warrantless wiretaps.
There are injustices upon injustices that are being committed upon the American people; we just don't seem to care anymore.
With the advent of modern technology from television to the internet among many other things, the people are never at a shortage for things to do, see, or watch.
That has also made it possible for the media to really bring the news to the people almost as it happens. There is no real reason why the people should not be informed of the evils going on in the world.
With all the other things they can do though, the news is just not much of a priority anymore.
Back when people were willing to take to the streets for things like the Birmingham Civil Rights March it was easy to see that people had their priorities straight; injustice should never be allowed to stand.
Fast forward to 2009 and we can barely be bothered to vote let alone watch the news.
It would seem that the priority in today's society has become completely self-centered and self motivated.
When we begin to care so much about ourselves that we forget about the rest of the world around us than we deserve the injustices that are committed against us; it's our own fault for not caring.
